The Future Is In Good Hands: A New Generation of Leaders Is Rising

A New Generation Nudges History

The March for Our Lives organized by survivors of the Florida high school shooting is not a one-off phenomenon. It is a vivid example of a new generation of leaders stepping up. With enormous energy, they are already nudging history through mastery of social media.

The speed of their impact is astounding. Emma Gonzalez, the student who gave a powerful speech the weekend after the shooting, posted on Twitter for the first time on February 18th. Within nine days she had over a million followers, twice as many as the NRA (which has been on Twitter for nine years).

Morals Matter

Emma and her million followers are putting pressure, not only politicians and corporations but on all of us, to make a clear choice on moral matters.

BTW, this morals matter issue is not going to “blow over” within a few weeks. It’s a sea-change that will rearrange some business and political priorities.

Have legacy leaders caught up with this new reality? According to Jim Cramer, the former hedge fund manager and host of CNBC’s Mad Money, they have not. “I can tell you categorically that they haven’t caught up at all. They are all taken by surprise. They are so out of touch with the rank and file.”

As you think about the implications, keep one thing in mind:

The future is not an optional event. Everyone will attend.

New Generation Leaders: Who Are They?

Many leaders of the future have already arrived. Who are they? Here is some of what I know about them.

Though they face monumental challenges, they are optimistic. Their capacity to make a positive difference in the world is not in question. It is a given.

The breadth of their access to information at a young age sets them apart from prior generations. Because of their global value system, they believe that strength is found in diversity and that all life is interconnected. This moves them to be empathetic and passionate about equality and justice. They will always stand strongly against discrimination in any form.

You can expect them to drive systemic change, but what are their ultimate intentions? One group — Generation Waking Up — intends to “bring forth a thriving, just, sustainable world.” Their mission is to:

  • Awaken in young people a clear sense of who we are as a generation, an understanding of the urgent global challenges and opportunities we face, and a calling to take action.
  • Empower young people with the training, mentoring, and support needed to thrive as global citizens, leaders, and change agents in the 21st century.
  • Mobilize young people locally and globally across issues, geography, and all lines of difference, unleashing the collaborative power of our generation.

Generation Waking Up is a movement of smart, serious people who are accelerating social change.  With Collaborative Leadership informed by Collective Intelligence, they are helping to shape a better tomorrow.

Check out their video. I not only found it informative, it made me want to get “with the program” and stay in sync with them.

A Fact About Our Future

Through our actions small and large, we each contribute to the condition and character of the most distant future. Like those who came before us, what we do in our time will echo in eternity. ~ Leland
